The Tallit is a Jewish prayer shawl worn while reciting morning prayers and in the synagogue on Shabbat as well as holidays. It is a rectangular garment with Tzitzit strings threaded through at the corners. The majority of men wear the Tallit, often gold Tallit in the time of prayers at the synagogue. Besides, there is a smaller garment known a Tallit-katan that can be worn on a day-to-day basis, in order to keep the mitzvah of the Tzitzit at all times. In respect of the Halacha, the Tallit is considered a popular ritual object for this commandment.

The Tallit is normally made out of pure ewe?€™s wool. Few people believe, only a woolen garment or linen garment is used for the purpose of fulfillment of the mitzvah. In accordance with some, also clothes made of synthetic materials carry the obligation of Tzitzit. Inasmuch as there are also acrylic, wool and silk Tallit available in the market.

Usefulness of Wearing Tallit

The purpose of this mitzvah in accordance with the Torah is to remind the individual of the commandments and to distance the person from following his eyes as well as the heart. It means to distance the person from bad deeds. The Tallit has a great utility in the time of prayer. It creates a barricade between the worshiper and the surroundings. It helps the worshipper to find the focus in the prayers. In Ashkenazic communities, wearing Tallit is applicable only after the wedding.

Generally, the Sephardic tradition is only for boys to wrap themselves in the Tallit from Bar Mitzvah age and sometimes earlier. In Yemenite communities, wearing Tallit is a tradition for boys from the age of education, when they are 5-year old. In Yemenite communities they would wear the Tallit throughout the day, folding the garment narrowly over their shoulder, especially when they are outside.
