This vintage Tibetan ring from Innovato Design is a great accessory for any man. Featuring gold and silver detailing, it has a number of different Buddhist symbols engraved around it. The front panel of the ring has a depiction of Guanyin, a Buddhist goddess, and the side panels feature a lotus and a dragon. Each of these symbols has a number of different meanings, allowing the wearer to express themselves however they want. It is a subtle reminder of one's’ faith, that allows them to look down and be reminded of the higher power that they believe in. Even if the wearer does not necessarily associate themselves with being Buddhist, there are a number of different symbols and meanings on this ring that resonate with a lot of people.

Bodhisattva

The main front panel of the ring is inscribed with a depiction of Guanyin, a beautiful Buddhist goddess. She has many names throughout Asian countries that practice Buddhism, but Guanyin is the most commonly known name. She is a main fixture in many Tibetan temples, and in this country she is also known as Chenrezig. She is often referred to as the “Goddess of Mercy”. Her name in Chinese translates to “The one who perceives the sounds of the Earth” due to the fact that she will help all those who pray to her. Guanyin is the main focus of the ring, to remind the wearer to embody her compassion, and to remind them that she will offer help, if only they ask for it.

Guanyin is known as a Bodhisattva. A Bodhisattva is a person who is on their path of Buddhahood, but has not yet attained it. It represents a commitment to Buddhism, and following a path that will lead to enlightenment. People who wear these Buddhism rings might like to do so to represent their spiritual journey, and to remind them that they still have a long way to go, but that there is a purpose to their journey. The path to enlightenment is a long one, but it will be worth it in the end.

Lotus

The lotus flower has many symbolic meanings, and is incredibly prominent in Buddhist culture. It is believed that each step that the baby Buddha took, a lotus would bloom in its’ wake. As one of the eight symbols of Buddhism, the lotus represents purity, for its ability to grow from dirt and remain pure. The roots of a lotus plant grow in muddy dirt, and yet the beautiful flower grows and blooms above the dirty water. Whatever the wearer of the ring is going through, or has been through, they hold within themselves the ability to remain pure and continue to rise.

The lotus also serves to represent enlightenment in Buddhist culture. Enlightenment (or bodhi, as it is also known as) refers to when a person finally understands the truth about life, and reaches nirvana. When they reach this state, they no longer remain in the cycle of reincarnation. When a lotus is in full bloom and open, it indicates the end of the journey, and that enlightenment has been found. The lotus depicted on this vintage ring is in partial bloom, indicating that enlightenment has not yet been found, and that one must continue to seek it. The lotus therefore serves to remind the wearer that there is a higher purpose, and they should focus on attaining enlightenment.

It is also believed that when someone passes away, they are placed into the heart of a lotus by Guanyin, so that they can travel to the Pure Land. This connects the image of Guanyin on the front of the Buddhism ring, to the lotus on the side.

Dragon

Dragons also have strong meanings in Asian cultures, not just in Buddhism. In Asia, dragons have always had significant meanings, differing slightly between countries. When Buddhism reached Asia, it adapted some of these elements into the religion. In Tibet, dragons are meant to protect temples, and are seen as a source of magic. This is why in many Tibetan temples, dragons will be seen adorning the ceiling, or on gates outside. Wearing a ring that features a dragon will help to protect the wearer and ensure that they are safe.

Dragons are also used in Buddhism to symbolize enlightenment and clarity. The sound of a dragon is said to awaken everyone who hears it, from delusion, helping them to reach clarity. The wearer of this ring only has to look down at the dragon, and be reminded of what is important in life. It is this symbolism that ties the dragon to Guanyin, for she listens to their sound.

There is a specific Buddhist school in Tibet, descended from Milarepa, that is symbolized by a dragon. Buddhist lore states that the first monastery of this school of Buddhism was built on a site that had been chosen by nine dragons. The dragon on this ring is not only to represent the protection and enlightenment of those who wear it, but the ties to these historic Tibetan monasteries, and what they represent today.
