Here's the artist BuddhArt's story behind this stunning piece:
"Although it may be hard to imagine today, much of Indonesia, in particular Java, was once devoutly Buddhist.
During the 10th and 11th centuries many majestic temples stretched across much of this vast island. Non was more impressive than Borobudur: a magnificent structure rising 9 levels high built on a hill among the volcanic plains 40km north of modern day Yogyakarta.
As with all sacred architecture, every step, gallery, terrace and feature has a deeply significant and symbolic meaning (the whole temple itself is known to be a representation of that holiest of mountains, Mt Meru). Pilgrims would reach Borobudur and begin a long ascension up to the first gallery. This and the next 5 are square in layout and the passageways are walled with large and amazing frescos and carved scenes from the Ramayana and the life of the Buddha.
The highest 3 tiers are circular, symbolising a transcendence beyond form as one nears Nirvana. It is here that circles of ‘latticed’ chedis are arranged, each originally containing a Buddha image. Now only a couple remain, exposed and sitting like gun-turret guards atop this ancient spiritual battleship."
