The history
How “The Bear Flag” came to represent California is a long and somewhat complex story… but suffice to say that this timeless symbol was born of the pioneer spirit, and to a large extent, still represents it even today! Although not officially adopted as the state flag until 1911, the Bear Flag made its first appearance in the early days of the state in 1846 in the Bear Flag Revolt.
At that time, fierce rivalries divided California, among them Mexican rule and the United States… and everybody seemed to have an opinion about how this far-western American promised land should be managed.
One group (located around what’s now present-day Sonoma County) had their own fiercely independent ideas about what kind of Republic California should be. And to fit with their rugged individualism and pioneer strength… they chose the perfect symbol:
THE BEAR!
Fast-forward a few decades, and the Bear Flag had endured the test of time. It had lasted through the Civil War, the Spanish American Conflicts (that greatly affected California), and the passage of decades.
When the people of California finally adopted “The Bear Flag” … it was thought to be a welcome symbol of California’s wild strength and indomitable spirit and widely embraced and loved. -- It still is today!
