Cardamom is used to spice both sweet and savory dishes. It is widely employed in Indian, Middle Eastern, Arabic, and Swedish cuisine. It comes in two types and is used as whole pods, seeds, or ground. Cardamom is found in the Garam Masala spice mixture that seasons meat and vegetable dishes, and in hot beverages such as masala chai and Turkish Coffee.

How to use Cardamom pods

To use the pods and seeds in cooking, the pods need to be ground or crushed. This can be managed very easily by using a pestle and mortar. Simply place the cardamom pods in the mortar and lightly pound the pods with the pestle. The pods will burst open and the seeds will ooze out.

The green cardamom pods are recommended for these options: Boil them in water, strain, let cool, and use the infused water. They are great for mulled wine, mocktails, lemonade, the famous masala chai, or even flavored rice and curries – don’t forget to remove the pods after the dish is cooked.

  • You can also wrap them in a muslin pouch and keep them in your linen closet or add it to your potpourri.
  • Add the pod to any oil, preferably a neutral aroma oil – and you have an aromatic oil – make sure there is no moisture.
  • Grind the pods into Powder and add a tiny bit of honey – you have an all-natural exfoliator ( check for allergies – some skin types are very sensitive).

A tablespoon of pods should yield two teaspoons of ground cardamom.

How To Grind Cardamom Seeds

Toast the cardamom pods in a dry skillet over medium heat for 2 or 3 minutes, shaking the pan occasionally, if you really want to intensify the flavor.

Place the cardamom pods in a mortar (or just put them on a cutting board) and smash with a pestle to crack open the pods.

Spread the cracked pods out, so you can pick out the shells and discard.

The seeds are rock hard, so instead of putting them back into the mortar, I put them in a spice grinder(If you have one, if not, use Mortar).

What are cardamom pods good for?

Cardamom is an herb. The seeds and oil from the seeds are used to make medicine.

Cardamom is used for digestion problems including heartburn, intestinal spasms, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), diarrhea, constipation, liver and gallbladder complaints, and loss of appetite. It is also used for common cold and other infections, cough, bronchitis, sore mouth and throat, urinary problems, epilepsy, headache, and high blood pressure.

In foods, cardamom is used as a spice. It is also used in soaps, creams, and perfumes.

What does cardamom tea taste like?

Cardamom has a complex flavor. It's citrusy, minty, spicy, and herbal all at the same time, and it's highly fragrant, too. Due to this, it's widely used in all sorts of dishes.

Just be careful not to use too much. If you aren't working off of a recipe, start with one pod, and add more until you're satisfied with the taste. If you're working with another strongly-flavored spice, you should take extra care not to overdo it. It's easy to overwhelm a dish with cardamom.
