The Colorado state flag begins with a field of three horizontal stripes -- two blue with a white stripe in between -- and a red C surrounding a yellow circle to the left of center. The C stands for Colorado, the Spanish word for red, and also the state flower, columbine, and the state nickname (Centennial State). The red, white and blue combine with the blue, yellow and white of the columbine. The state’s history of mining gold and silver also play a part in the white and gold of the flag.
