What is a KN95 respirator face mask?
KN95 respirator face masks are respirators with a Chinese testing standard similar to the US NIOSH N95 respirators and European FFP2 respirators, as shown by this test model from 3M.
They are made for public use and are often stated as non-medical. The COVID health crisis is an exception here. The FDA recognized the limited supply of US-produced N95s and surgical masks, therefore they decided to allow KN95s from curtain suppliers to be imported/used for medical purposes.

The most important tested criteria are these three:
- Filter performance (how many aerosols pass through the respirator face mask in %)
- Leakage (how many aerosols pass through in %)
- Flow rate (basically how much air flows through without the user suffocating or having a hard time to breathe with constant use)
