The History
El Salvador -- The Savior -- has flown a number of flags throughout its history, from the before its independence from Spain on September 15, 1821 through the Flag of the United Central American Federation.
Eventually inspired by Argentina and the Federal Republic of Central America, the flag came to three horizontal stripes consisting of alternating blue and white colors with the National Coat of Arms in the center. The blue stripes represent the two oceans -- the Atlantic and the Pacific -- that border Central America while the white stripe symbolizes peace.
The coat of arms includes the circular message Republica de el Salvador en la America Central (Republic of El Salvador in Central America). The five volcanoes embody the five states of Central America.
