Singing bowls are used in yoga, music therapy, sound healing, and religious ceremonies. In the Buddhist tradition, they are played to signal the beginning and the end of silent meditation cycles. Like a bell, the tone is produced by striking the side of the bowl with a wooden mallet. By running the mallet around the bowl - only with slight pressure - a pure tone will eventually rise. When this happens, the bowl is said to sing - hence its name.
Avalokiteshvara is the Buddhist deity of Great Compassion who has vowed to relieve the suffering of all beings. Avalokiteshvara is the spiritual father of Tara, who is said to have been born from a lotus that grew in a lake formed by the tears he shed as he gazed in compassion at the infinite sufferings of the world. Avalokiteshvara's mantra "Om Mani Padme Hung" is endowed with the capacity to purify one's mind from evils of all obscuration, thereby sowing the seed of Love and Compassion in oneself.
