On the Western Front, soldiers complain about the mud. Here, thousands of feet above the treeline, the complaints are about ice, glaciers, boulders, and endless, futile assaults that follow battle plans which failed the first eleven times. The war against the Austro-Hungarian Empire has cost Italy dearly and resulted in infinitesimal gains. Nevertheless, the Italian soldier struggles on-straight into the machine guns for Luigi Cadorna.
