The History

This flag reaches back to the 1600s and far surpasses the original Maryland Flag in its level of detail and originality.
Officially adopted as recently as 1904, this “heraldic” flag replaced the original Maryland Flag (which was just the state seal on a blue background, like many other states) and has remained in service ever since.
