A little history

Whether it was won in the war with Mexico in 1848 or it is the burial place of Billy the Kid or Los Alamos, New Mexico, the 47th state, has made an imprint on the history and fabric of the United States... The red is used to depict the ancient Zia sun symbol (for the Zia Pueblo tribe in New Mexico), and it lays centered on a field of yellow... The Zia people keep the sun sacred and use its symbols on a variety of things.

The Zia sun symbol flag design was done by Dr. Harry Mera, an archeologist with an understanding of the symbol who won a contest done at the behest of the Daughters of the American Revolution, some time after New Mexico entered statehood in 1912... It was officially adopted in 1925.

The Zia sun symbols is made up of four sets of four rays, with the number four being a sacred number to the Zia tribe... Here are what each set of four symbols mean, according to New Mexican statute:

• Four points of the compass: East, West, North, South
• Four seasons of the year: Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter
• Four periods of each day: Morning, Noon, Evening, Night
• Four seasons of life: Childhood, Youth, Middle Years, Old Age
• Zia's belief that with life comes four sacred obligations: One must develop a strong body, a clear mind, a pure spirit and a devotion to the welfare of others.
