A little history
New York stands tall in the world in many ways -- from Wall Street to the United Nations in New York City to Niagara Falls -- it is a stalwart for global finance, diplomacy and natural wonder... It is always moving fast, and the upcoming minor change in the State Flag reflects that.
The flag shows a simplistic design, much like other states, with the State Coat of Arms -- which is also featured on the State Seal of New York -- centered on a deep blue background.
On the Coat of Arms of the state, which was adopted in 1778, is a shield featuring the Hudson River with three masted ships (embodying commerce) and three mountains in the background for the state's highlands... a sun rising above the mountains is emblematic of hope.
A bald American Eagle (good omen) sits atop a globe... Two women stand alongside the images, Liberty and Justice... On the left, Liberty wears a crown on her left foot to represent the failed attempts of the British Monarchy to take over the United States. She also wears a Phrygian cap, which was given to Roman slaves upon their emancipation... Justice on the right in blindfolded with a scale in one hand and sword in another to symbolize every reward and punishment be delivered with fairness.
Beneath all of this is the State Motto "Excelsior" (Ever Upward)... In 2020, Gov. Andrew Cuomo pushed to have the United States Motto "E Pluribus Unum" (Out of many, one) to be added to the State Flag... In April of that year, the state legislature passed a 2021 budget that included the change.
