A Little History

Reaching back to 1889, the State Flag of North Dakota got its start as a combat banner in one of the United State’s little known wars around the turn of the century. 

As the symbol and battle regimental flag carried by of North Dakota’s infantry contingent in the Spanish-American War and Philippine Insurrection… the modern day flag is almost a carbon-copy of that 19th century banner. - And you can tell!

The original design closely resembled the Coat of Arms of the U.S., yet with its own flair and artwork… this simple and strong flag continues to fly over North Dakota to this day... In the center, the eagle carries a ribbon saying "E Pluribus Unum"... the eagles bears a shield bears 13 red and white stripes to represent the original thirteen states, which can also be seen in the 13 stars in a fan shaped design above the eagle's head.

Officially adopted by North Dakota’s legislature on March 3, 1911, and updated in 1943 to more closely match the carefully-preserved original battle flag (which is on display in Bismark)... this now-iconic flag has carried North Dakota into the modern era, where she’s become an energy-mining powerhouse and a new American frontier!
