Imagine trekking through the untamed wilderness of South America in the mid-late 1700's and you come across a plant adorned with striking pink and purple leaves. How amazing would it have been to see this for the first time? This is the level of awe explorer/navigator Louis Antoine de Bougainville (1729-1811) must have experienced when he came across this plant for the first time. Being the first European to have "discovered" the plant he named it after himself (Bougainville) and due to it's very delicate deep pink flowers that look like paper, has become affectionally known as the "Paper Flower". To be clear, the flowers are bracts of leaves at the tip of the stems that turn brilliant pink in color. Likes sun and warm temperatures.
