This year marks the 200th anniversary of the bloody Battle Of New Orleans. American troops led by General Andrew Jackson came from far and wide to help battle the British troops, but many believe it was the pirate Jean Lafitte whose involvement helped turn the tide of the war. Lafitte made a deal with Jackson for him and his men to fight alongside the Americans in exchange for pardons. After the war Jackson praised Lafitte and his men for "exhibiting the same courage and fidelity" as his troops.
