Can these be mounted on a 4x4 post?

Yes they can, very easily. You can mount them just about anywhere, they don't have to be directly in the sun. I have mine under the eve of the house. Keep in mind that these are not dusk to dawn lights but motion sensors. They won't come on until they detect motion. they will stay on about 30 secs.

I have a lot of trees and very little sunlight. Would I have to take them of the bracket and move them to direct sunlight during the day?

No I don't think so. I have mine located where no direct sunlight hits them and even on cloudy days they get plenty of sun. The motion detector works just fine also. I found this item to be very useful and reliable.

Can these sit on the ground?

I guess,I don't think they are built to be applied in that manner.

Are these lights motion detection sensitive enough to catch cats and dogs?

Yes. Sensitive and bright. It is one of my best purchase.
