The History
The Flag of Puerto Rico, though simple, is loaded with historical and symbolic meaning…
While on the surface, it looks like nothing more than a simplification of the United States Flag (under which it’s a territory) … nothing could be farther from the truth.
In fact… this flag was first flown on December 22, 1895, as a symbol of independence from Cuban and Spanish rule. Then, was adopted by the Puerto Rican National party and became a symbol of resistance to the growing US influence.
So it’s a long-lasting symbol… dating far back beyond US influence.
As time passed, and Puerto Rico became a US commonwealth territory in 1952… the flag stayed put. It was already a symbol of Puerto Rican Pride!
The five horizontal stripes (two white and three red) don’t ape the U.S. Flag … instead, they represent “the rights of all people,” “the freedom of the individual” and the blood that feeds a government that ensures those freedoms to its people. Its design closely resembles the flag of Cuba, reversing the red and blue.
And while the white star represents the Commonwealth itself… the three-sided blue triangle reminds us of the three branches of government that guide this small, yet fiercely independent nation.
