The history:
The South Africa flag was adopted in 1994, at the time the only national flag in the world with six colors, after Nelson Mandela was freed from prison and named president following the end of Apartheid.
The orange, white and blue tricolor comes from Dutch flag as the Dutch settled Capetown in 1652. The orange of the South African flag is different as it mixes in the red of the United Kingdom red of the Union Jack to represent their taking over of the Cape colony in 1815. The green, black and yellow colors come from the African National Congress, which opposed Apartheid for decades until its end.
When Mandela became president in 1994, he wanted to show it would move forward and the road of unity ahead. It is representative of the convergence of diverse elements.
