The History

A simple design full of history embodies the fur trade and gold rush that attracted Americans and European settlers alike in the 19th century.

Although the great state of South Dakota was admitted to the union on November 2, 1889, the first state flag wasn't adopted for another 20 years. The first of several flag designs were done by Ida Anding and initiated at the behest of Seth Bullock (of Deadwood fame) and Senator Ernest May.

The first flag sported a field of sky blue with a blazing sun in the center. The words South Dakota laid in gold letters above the sun with the official state nickname -- The Sunshine State -- below it. On the reverse side, the Great Seal of South Dakota is embedded inside the sun.

The Seal side became the design in later years and the state nickname changed to The Mount Rushmore State in 1992.
