Before the war, the enormous T-35 was used primarily as a parade vehicle and showcase for Soviet engineering skill. When the German army invaded in 1941, the decision was made to deploy them to front line units. But, its slow land speed, enormous size (almost 10 meters long and weighing more than 50 tons), and mechanical problems haunted the design: about 90 percent of the T-35 casualties were due to mechanical transmission failure rather than enemy action.
